Hello, fellow eco-travel enthusiasts!
Today I want to take you along on a unique journey that unfolded in the heart of a city famously known for its shimmering lights and bustling casinos—Las Vegas. But as you know, I see different kinds of gems on my travels. Join me as I uncover the *sustainable* gems of this vibrant desert oasis.
Morning
My day started early as I wanted to beat the heat and check out the renowned Springs Preserve. Located about three miles from the Strip, this 180-acre cultural institution is dedicated to sustainability and local history. The Preserve features museums, galleries, an outdoor concert venue, and botanical gardens—all operated on sustainable principles. The solar panels powering the facilities and the water-smart landscapes were just the beginning of an incredible learning experience. The Preserve’s commitment to recycling water and its onsite production of solar power demonstrate how Las Vegas is taking strides toward a greener future.
Afternoon
As the sun climbed higher, I made my way to The Mob Museum, which recently achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification. Through captivating exhibits about the history of organized crime and law enforcement, the museum also educates on sustainability. It’s amazing how a building that tells old stories is itself a testament to modern sustainable practices.
For lunch, I treated myself to a meal at VegeNation, a locally-owned plant-based restaurant that sources its ingredients from local farms. The food was not only delicious but also reassuringly sustainable, emphasizing the importance of reducing our carbon footprint through what we eat.
Evening
As dusk fell over the city, I visited the High Roller Observation Wheel. Standing tall at 550 feet, it’s an iconic part of the Las Vegas skyline and surprisingly eco-friendly. The wheel is powered by renewable energy, and the LED lights that brighten the night sky are highly energy-efficient. The view of the city was breathtaking, especially knowing that I was enjoying it in an environmentally sensitive way.
Before heading back, I strolled through the LINQ Promenade, an open-air retail, dining, and entertainment district that focuses on sustainability with its waste reduction methods and energy-efficient practices.
Reflections
This trip showed me a different side of Las Vegas—a side that commits to environmental stewardship amidst its growth and tourism. It was a day of discovery, of seeing first-hand how even the most unlikely places can implement sustainable practices if there’s a will.
To all my eco-conscious readers, Las Vegas is proof that any destination can nurture the planet if the effort is made. Whether it’s a city known for its casinos or a small rural town, the seeds of sustainability can flourish.
Thank you for joining me on this enlightening journey. Keep following for more updates as I explore more hidden sustainable treasures across the United States.
Safe travels and sustainable journeys,
Olivia
